Choose a New Cooktop That is Easy to Clean

Remodeling a kitchen can be a blast. You get to choose cabinets, fixtures, tiles and countertops to your heart's content. Once you've made the major decisions, don't forget to spend some time selecting the best cooktop for your kitchen.

There are several types of cooktops. The standard and somewhat old-fashioned electric coil or gas burners are just two of the choices available. Now you can select a grill attachment or a smooth glass cooktop that has a flat surface. You'll already know if your kitchen is set up for gas or electric. The cost of changing from one to the other can be costly so you might consider sticking with what you have and limiting your options in this way.

Consider the cleaning process. It might seem pessimistic to start thinking about cleaning when you haven't even purchased your cooktop yet, but if you spend some time thinking about cleaning before you buy, you might be happier with your choice. Select the cooktop that is easiest to clean and you'll be happier for your choice in the long run.

Some cooktops offer the option to raise the cooktop so you can clean underneath. If you've never checked this option for your range, you might be surprised at what has been building up underneath the cooktop. Take the time to thoroughly clean this area. Any cooktop should be wiped down after every use and thoroughly cleaned at least once a year or after any big spills. Cleaning the cooktop will prevent unpleasant smells from caked-on food and will add a sparkle to your kitchen.

If your cooktop has coil burners, they can become a mess of grease and burnt foods if not cleaned regularly. To prevent the smell of burning every time you turn on the cooktop, you should maintain the coil burners. You can clean your electric coil burners with some elbow grease and common household items.

When gas burners get dirty, they can clog, causing your food to cook unevenly. You might even begin to notice a smell of gas and delay in the burner lighting because of the clogged burners. If you want to clean gas burners, take the time to read the manual to find out how to disassemble the gas burners and how to clean the cooktop. Pay special attention to the safety instructions and steps for turning off the pilot light and gas connection if necessary.

After considering your options practically, you can select the cooktop that is best for your kitchen and your lifestyle. Though the choice of cooktop may seem like a small one compared to all the other decisions you're making, you'll end up glad that you considered ease of cleaning in your assessment of the many cooktop options available.

Arctic Monkeys - Brianstorm (lyrics)

*LYRICS* Brian, Top marks for not tryin' So kind of you to bless us with your effortlessness We're grateful and so strangely comforted And I wonder are you puttin' us under Cause we can't take our eyes off the t-shirt and ties combination Well see you later, innovator Some want to kiss some want to kick you There's not a net you couldn't slip through Or at least that's the impression I get cause you're smooth and you're wet And she's not aware yet but she's yours She'll be sayin' use me Show me the jacuzzi I imagine that it's there on a plate Your rendezvous rate means that you'll never be frightened to make them wait for a while I doubt it's your style not to get what you set out to acquire The eyes are on fire You are the unforecasted storm (Brian) Calm, collected, and commandin' (Top marks for not tryin') You made the other stories standin' With your renditions and jokes Bet there's hundreds of blokes that have wept cause you've stolen their ...thunder Are you puttin' us under Cause we can't take our eyes off the t-shirt and ties combination We'll see you later, innovator

10 Things You Can Replace in Your House Which Will Help You Go Green

Are you interested in making your home more energy-efficient? How about saving some money in the long run? Well, here are a few items that you should consider replacing in your home, especially if you've had them in place over 10 years.

Bathroom Sink Faucet - Did you know that a dripping bathroom sink faucet can waste as much as 3,000 gallons per year? If the faucet was purchased and installed before 1994, it can flow at a rate of 3 to 7 gallons per minute. Current federal law requires that all new faucets have a flow rate no more than 2.2 gallons per minute.

Toilet - Older toilets can use as much as 7 gallons per flush. Redesigned toilets can use 1.6 gallons or less per flush.

Showerhead - Newer showerheads are designed to produce large water droplets at a high velocity providing the sensation of high water flow. Some of the newer showerheads also allow you to adjust the flow from the current 2.5 gallons per minute to less than 2 gallons per minute.

Refrigerator - Newer refrigerators have high-efficiency compressors, thicker insulation and more precise temperature controls. When replacing a refrigerator, be sure and look for an Energy Star label which means it meets strict energy-efficient standards set by the Environmental Protection Agency.

Cooktop -
Cooktops are one of the least energy-efficient appliances in the home. Gas burners with standing pilots can use more than double the energy in one year than gas burners with electric ignition.

Dishwasher - Today's dishwashers are much more energy efficient than older models as they usually conserve time, water as well as energy.

Washer and Dryer - There are dramatic savings to be realized with new washers and dryers with the Energy Star rating. You can expect to save up to $550 over the appliance's lifetime. Front loading washers use the least water and electricity. New dryers have moisture senors in them which shut off the machine when the clothes are dry.

Windows - Newer, more efficiently sealed windows can help you cut your energy bill by as much as 15 percent. You have the choice of double or triple pane windows which reduce heat flow and prevent condensation.

Water Heater - New tankless water heaters can save you up to $500 in operating costs. Or, you can opt for a solar heating system will save you anywhere from 50 to 80 percent in energy costs.

Heating and Air Conditioning - If you've had your heating and air conditioning system more than 12 to 15 years, then it's probably time to start thinking about a replacement system. Energy Star certified systems can probably save you anywhere from 20 to 30 percent on heating and cooling costs.

Replacing all of these items at one time is cost prohibitive, but you should start reviewing the list and gradually replace the oldest appliances as soon as you can afford it. It will ultimately bring you long term savings and make you a much happier consumer.

Safely Deep Clean Your Kitchen Stove

There are a couple of different ways to safely deep clean your kitchen stove. This appliance is the most used in the home and gets dirty quickly while being used. Here we will look at two of the best ways to deep clean this appliance safely. Most cook stoves are electric and 220 volts can be dangerous when water is involved. Therefore, all appliances must be unplugged before cleaning.

Things you will need are rubber gloves, oven cleaner, paper towels, hand trucks, clean rags, or old towels. The Stove needs to be in a well, ventilated area for fresh air. These will all be, used for this task.

First, unplug the appliance then with a set of hand trucks move the appliance out side onto a level flat area. Preferably, a concrete patio, driveway, or garage will work well. You want some place that will not hurt if there is grease inside the kitchen appliance. You also want open air as oven cleaner is not good for you to breathe in directly.

Next, put some absorbent material under the bottom of the stove and sides. This will help to keep water and cleaner from collecting in the appliance. You can then take a good quality oven cleaner and spray the entire appliance inside and out. Let the over cleaner set for the required amount of time to remove and loosen all the stuck on, baked on materials.

Once the time is up, you can take a good, clean heavy rag or paper towels and wipe away all, the oven cleaner and the stuck on materials off. Then use plain water and another rag to remove the remaining oven cleaner. Do not use soap and the oven cleaner never mix chemicals together! Use only clear water until all, the cleaner is gone. Only then if you have a problem area can you use soap or other cleaner. Dry the kitchen stove with the old towels and then let it sit.

Let the stove sit and dry for the remainder of the day then simply use the hand truck to move the stove back to its place. Plug the kitchen stove back in and begin using it as normal.

You can also use this method at a car wash and power clean the inside of the appliance however you will have to let the appliance sit for two or three days to dry out completely. This is only in the case of a severely soiled appliance should it be power or pressure cleaned.
