Carpet Stain Home Remedies

No matter how careful you are, it will happen. You will have a guest who knocks over a glass of wine. Or you'll have a pet who tips over your cup of coffee. Or maybe you'll have a child who spills his juice. One way or another, you will get a spot on your carpet. The trick is to stop that spot from becoming a stain. By acting quickly, using the right cleaning mix, and maybe using some equipment, you should be able to keep a carpet spot from becoming a carpet stain.

The most important thing to know about cleaning up a spot on your carpet is to act quickly. The longer the spot sits, the more difficult it will be to clean. As soon as something is spilled, start working on cleaning it up. Get a white rag or paper towel, and use it to blot up as much of the liquid as possible. As soon as one rag gets soaked through, get a different one. Use something heavy to press the rag down on the spot, absorbing as much liquid as possible.

If the white rag doesn't completely remove the stain, then try a bit of clear dish liquid mixed with warm water. Mix a small amount of the liquid, maybe 1/4c, with some water, about 1c, into a spray bottle. Spray the liquid on the stain enough to dampen the stain without completely soaking the stain. Pat the stain hard with the rag, making sure to soak up all of the liquid. Continue this until the stain is gone.

If the dish soap cannot even do the job it may be time to pull out the big guns. It may be time to use a shop vacuum. Some stains are stubborn and some just sat too long and had time to set in. If you cannot use harsher chemicals like bleach try a shop vacuum. Even if you cannot entirely remove a stain at this point, a shop-vac can make them look better and be the difference between buying new carpet or having a few small spots on your existing carpet. You can use the vacuum to repeatedly dampen an area and suck up the cleaning liquid. What would take hours by hand, can take minutes with a shop vacuum.

For those inevitable times when stains happen use these 3 steps prevent or at least reduce long term damage. Remember to act quickly, use gentle chemicals such as soap for tougher stains, and for the toughest stains use a shop vacuum.
